On the Rubu' Qarn student innovation film I was director of photography, not director; Tarun Shyam directed for Street FZC. The idea we built the whole film on was a first-person point of view from the object the student was making, so the camera becomes the thing she is building, watching her back. To sell that, I shot Open Gate on a Blackmagic Pyxis, not for reframing but to sit in the object's own proportions, and added a subtle vignette and chromatic aberration so the frame feels like looking out through the object's own optics. The film carries her journey, from the struggle of building to the pride of finishing, entirely from that one point of view.
Through The Object's Eyes
The idea we built the whole film on was first person, shot from the point of view of the object the student was making. Every setup sits where the object would sit, on the bench, in her hands, held up to the light, so the audience sees her the way her project would. That one decision does the emotional work: her focus and her frustration land as if the object itself is feeling them.
To make the point of view convincing I shot Open Gate, using the full height of the sensor. Not for reframing later, but so the frame sat in the object’s own proportions rather than a normal widescreen crop. Then I added a subtle vignette and a touch of chromatic aberration, motivated rather than decorative, so the image reads as looking out through the object’s own optics.
Framing stayed close, low, and tactile, on hands, tools, and materials, the proximity you only get if you actually are the object. Transitions were built in camera to carry the passage of time, and the Arabic voice-over sits in her voice, keeping the whole film locked to her perspective from the inside.
DOP note
The camera is not watching her work. The camera is the thing she is working on, watching her back.
The Craft

- Lens
- DZOFilm Arles primes
- Format
- Open Gate, object-POV
- Look
- Motivated vignette + aberration
I shot on a Blackmagic Pyxis 6K with DZOFilm Arles large-format primes. The Arles glass gives a clean, controlled base image, which matters here, because the optical character of the film, the vignette and the aberration, is added on purpose and shaped, not left to a cheaper lens to introduce by accident.
The film was shot in Sharjah for the Rubu’ Qarn Season for Innovation, moving across the workshop and campus settings where the student’s project actually came together. The constraint was holding the object-POV consistently across very different spaces, so that a single, unusual perspective carried the entire film.
Inspirations
The finished film reads less like an education recap and more like a piece of subjective cinema. A student’s innovation project, seen from beginning to end through the eyes of the thing she was building, carrying her journey from struggle to pride in a single, committed point of view.
The reference language was first-person, subjective camera: the lens as a character, motivated optical cues instead of clean coverage, and a closeness that only makes sense if the camera truly is the object in her hands.
