On this Hadia Ghaleb swimwear film I was director of photography, not director; the concept and direction were Ghaleb Production House's. I built a warm, sun-drenched pastel look and let the daylight stay honest. Beach sun at the wrong hour is flat and cold on skin, so the craft was in warming and softening it, bouncing light back into the shadows for a glowy finish and holding golden tones in the skin while the sea kept its blue behind. The palette runs pink and sea blue, the swimwear's own colours, so the grade supports the product rather than recolouring it. The point was warmth you believe: relatable, not airbrushed.
Golden Skin, Pastel Light
The film runs two registers. One is loose and joyful, the group beats, models walking hand in hand along the shoreline, a veiled woman and an unveiled woman in the same frame, which is the label’s whole idea made literal. I shot those handheld, close and moving, so the energy read as real rather than staged.
The other register is composed and still, the solo portraits. A beauty close-up as a model lowers her sunglasses, the sun sparking off the frame. A low-angle portrait under a sheer pink scarf against a clean blue sky. Those I shot on a shallow depth for intimacy, patient and framed, so a relatable film still delivered the single strong images a fashion brand needs.
Flare was a tool, not an accident. I let the sun catch a lens and a pair of sunglasses on purpose, for the bloom and the summer feeling, then kept it controlled enough that faces and fabric stayed clean.
DOP note
The point was warmth you believe: relatable, not airbrushed.

- DZOFilm Pictor Zoom
- Light
- Beach sun, bounce + negative fill
- Grade
- Warm pastel, golden skin
- Frame
- Handheld + locked, drone aerials
The work was mostly exposure and shaping under a hard sun. Bounce and negative fill for the skin, a chosen time of day, flare let in and then controlled, and the warm pastel grade protected in camera so it read as light rather than a filter. Drone aerials opened the coast up between the closer beats.
Handheld carried the group energy and locked framing held the portraits, so the two registers stayed distinct in the cut. The film was cut several ways from the same coverage, a hero fashion film, teasers, a lip-sync version and a longer edit, each in horizontal and vertical.
Inspirations
The label makes inclusive swimwear, pieces for veiled and unveiled women alike, so one line dresses a whole beach rather than one kind of woman. The film had to carry that idea without turning it into a statement: just women, together, on a real beach, in honest light.
The trap in swimwear film is the airbrushed look that flatters the product and flattens the person. The reference language here was the opposite, warm, relatable glamour, the polish held in the grade and the framing rather than in retouching.
