On Figures I was director of photography, not director. The concept and the performance were Maimana El Hassan and Yahya Ibrahim's work; mine was the image. I built the look around a warm, sun-baked desert grade with a grainy, filmic texture. Al Ain gives you hard light and long shadows for free, so I leaned into it, shaping with bounce and negative fill rather than flooding the frame. The grain and the warmth are what tie a domino table under a tree to a smashed mirror in the dirt: the same film. I kept the camera close and patient on Beykay and let the surreal staging around him carry the strangeness.
Water, Earth, Fire, Air
Each scene had its own camera logic. The opening domino game I shot from directly overhead on a slow dolly out, the hands and the tiles reading like a board of their own. The rooftop beat is a flat top-down of Beykay lying on a bright patterned mattress, graphic and still.
For the mirror scene I laid a mirror on the desert floor so it held the sky, framed his reflection performing, then let the frame take the hit as a bat came down and shattered it. Elsewhere the camera does the work of the edit: a slow zoom pulls off a poured-liquid moment out to the mountains behind him, and a white-table set-piece runs a repeated, motion-control-style move so it cuts like a loop.
The roots-over-the-face tableau is the opposite, a held, painterly frame that pulls back slowly to leave an image rather than a shot. Handheld carried the squad performance, loose and energetic, so the one straight rap-to-camera verse had a different pulse from everything around it.
DOP note
The grain and the warmth tie a domino table under a tree to a smashed mirror in the dirt: the same film.

Almost all of it is natural light, shaped rather than added. In a desert, at the right hour, the sun is the best source you have, and the craft is in controlling it: choosing the time of day, bouncing into shadow, cutting spill, and protecting the grade in camera so the warmth and grain were baked in and not painted on later.
The shoot moved across Al Ain and Dubai, using rooftops, open desert, and a farm as ready-made sets, with the art direction built from everyday, found objects rather than built pieces. The film had to look like a considered art piece while being made lean, which put the weight on framing, light, and grade to raise the material.
Inspirations
Figures released as Beykay’s official music video in 2023 and was named in SceneNoise’s Best Music Videos of 2023 for the Middle East and North Africa. It reads as one continuous, sun-baked world, a set of surreal vignettes held together by the light and the grade rather than by a single location.
The reference language was art-film hip-hop: elemental, surreal staging shot with the formal restraint of a portrait. Beykay performs with a melancholy under the swagger, so the frame stays composed while the world inside it turns stranger.
